Mayor
Klaus Hanson strongly encourages the citizens of Laramie to get involved
in the governance of the City by applying to serve as a volunteer
on boards and commissions. Boards and commissions are a vital link
of communication between citizen volunteers and City Council and
City Administration. A brief description and meeting schedule of
each of the boards/commissions is given below.
Albany County Tourism Joint
Powers Board
Administers lodging tax on transient
guests in the City of Laramie.
Meets the third Monday of each
month at 4:00 p.m.
Building & Fire Code
Board of Appeals
Hears appeals on decisions made
by building officials relating to application and interpretation
of Fire and Building Codes. Determines suitability of alternative
materials and types of construction. Provides interpretation of Fire
Code provisions.
Meets as needed.
Board of Health
Sets rules and regulations governing
their own affairs, as well as the duties of the City of Laramie Health
Officer. Sets rules and regulations concerning the control of communicable
diseases. One member must be a medical doctor and one must be a dental
surgeon.
Meets quarterly.
Civil Service Commission
Certifies all promotion and hiring
lists in the Police and Fire Departments. Responsible for classifying
positions within Police and Fire Departments. Monitors dismissal
from City service and hears grievance appeals from City employees.
Meetings held as needed.
Downtown Development Authority
Board
Promotes health, safety, prosperity,
security and general welfare of inhabitants of central business district.
Prevents/halts deterioration of property values and/or structures
within Laramie central business district. Prevents/halts growth of
blighted areas in central business district. Assists in development
and redevelopment of central business district. Assists in overall
planning to restore and/or provide for continuance of health of Laramie’s
central business district.
Meets at 6:15 p.m. on first
Wednesday of every month.

Environmental Advisory
Committee (EAC)
Hears from public on issues regarding
environmental problems and notifies City and County of those problems.
Suggests methods of investigation of pertinent laws and environmental
policy alternatives to Council members and County Commissioners.
Meets
at 6:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.

Laramie Advisory Commission
on Disabilities
Reviews disabled accessibility
in city, county and joint powers facilities. Promotes public awareness
on disabled accessibility and employment issues. Serves as grievance
board for issues concerning city structures and program administration
as required by Americans with Disabilities Act. Works with coordinator
to develop transition plan to remedy problems identified through
grievance procedure and/or self-evaluation plan.

Laramie Plains Civic Center
Joint Powers Board
Administers acquisition, financing,
renovation and operation of Civic Center. Prepares Civic Center budget
for review by City Council and County Commissioners. Enters into
contracts and agreements relevant to operation of Center.
Meets the second Tuesday of each
month at 6:00 p.m.
Laramie Regional Airport
Board
Directs and controls management
and operation of Laramie Regional Airport.
Meets at 7:30 a.m. on second or
third Thursday of every month.
Parks, Tree & Recreation
Advisory Board
Studies, develops and updates comprehensive
written plan for current and future park and open space development.
Advises Council on matters relating to acquisition of facilities
for promotion and development of parks and open space within City.
Advises Council on rules and regulations concerning use of parks,
open space and related facilities. Advises recreation manager on
matters relating to planning, development and expansion of recreational
areas. Makes recommendations to recreation manager regarding programs
and activities.
Meets at 7:00 p.m. on second Wednesday
of every month.
Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Adjustment
Advises Council on urban planning
and land use.
Grants variances to zoning ordinance requirements. Adjusts/modifies orders issued by City Engineer. Hears grievances from citizens on matters relating to actions of city officials.
Meets
at 4:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of every month. Both meetings are scheduled to be action sessions and meets in Council Chambers.

Traffic Commission
Advises Council on matters relating
to traffic control and street accidents. Prepares rules and regulations
affecting traffic on city streets for Council consideration.
Meets at 7:00 a.m. on second Thursday
of every month.

Urban Systems Advisory Committee (USAC)
This committee is comprised of
representatives from the City of Laramie, Albany County, the University
of Wyoming and the Wyoming Department of Transportation. They make
recommendations regarding cooperative planning procedures for travel
analysis and project selection for the Urban System Program as administered
by WYDOT, and address the planning and extension of roadways through
the Major Street and Highway plan inside and outside the City corporate
boundaries.
