Bicycle Patrol
The Laramie Police Department, along with many other progressive law enforcement agencies throughout the United States, employ bicycle patrols as part of their officer deployment. Although, the Laramie Police Department has used this resource for a number of years, it will be more prominent than ever with the advent of the Downtown Storefront Operation. During acceptable weather conditions officers will deploy on bicycle patrol on a more routine basis mostly in the Laramie Downtown area during all hours of the day. Bicycle patrols will be staged at the Storefront located at 3rd and Garfield Streets.
Not just any officer who decides to ride a bike is allowed to do so. To use a bike on patrol, officers must attend specialized “police bicycle training” and be tested and certified to do so. The Department now has certified bike instructors to accomplish this mission. The bikes are specially equipped as are the officers who use them, with safety as the number one priority.
The advantages of bike patrols include:
- More contact with citizen’s on a routine basis
- Better visibility and interaction with the surrounding environment
- Faster response to calls for service in the core of the City of Laramie
- Less threatening approach to citizens
- More stealth in detecting crimes in progress
