MOSQUITO CONTROL

Risk of West Nile Virus Rating

The City of Laramie currently rates the risk of West Nile virus infection at level 0 (No Risk). This rating is based on the lack of mosquito activity as vector mosquitoes have ceased active feeding and gone into winter hibernation. All mosquito surveillance and control programs have concluded for the season.

The Rocky Mountain region has seen a marked decrease in human cases this season. Cooler temperatures and increased mosquito control activities have combined to keep the number of infections down. Wyoming Department of Health is currently reporting twelve human cases of WNv in the state. The national case count for human West Nile virus infections is under 900 at the present time and should end the year at the lowest number since 2001. Texas leads the nation with 103 confirmed cases.
